When to dig up, seperate & replant Day Lillies

We have a bunch of day lillies that bloom in mid summer, around June to July, the flowers grow about 20 to 30" tall and are mostly orange in color with some yellow highlights. When can we dig up, seperate and re-plant, now (spring), summer or fall time? They are getting too crowded and need to be split up around the island that they only take up about 1/10th of currently.

Thanks,
jim

Doug says that daylilies (Hemerocallis) are not really lilies but are herbaceous perennials. And you can dig/divide them in the very early spring or late fall. Hard to kill this plant. In fact, you can dig and divide them almost at any time of the summer too (one of the few perennials that you can do this with) if you're careful.

Doug says - go to this Plant Propagation page for info.

As for "can you help me?" - unfortunately, I'm busy that day. :-)
