Watering Hyacinths

I have just received three flowering Hyacinth bulbs. They are merely sitting 1-3in down in what appears to be some dry soil. I am curious to know, as I am an apartment dweller, how I can best tend to these bulbs to make them last longer. How much do I water them? Can I plant them in a pot or are they best outside? Any specific instructions on care I should be aware of? I am new to this flower so help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Doug says: water when the soil is dry to the touch, if the soil is damp to the touch, do not water. That's it for watering. Keep them as cool as possible in full sunlight to extend the bloom time.

Growing them another year is going to be very difficult for you in an apartment. They will do best planted outside in the ground (you can do this after frost has gone). For full instructions for forcing bulbs yourself, see the indoor bulb page.

My .02 is that this is .75 worth of bulbs and I think you should enjoy their blooms and fragrance yourself. Then find a friend with a garden and give them away to grow. Next fall, you can start your own if you're adventurous or can purchase started bulbs again next spring.
