water emerging tulips?
(Espanola, NM)
Hi. I live in New Mexico. I planted tulips for the first time last October. It is now Feb 28th, and they have been emerging for about a week. We've had no precipitation for all of Jan and Feb. Should I water them? I see from our 10 day forcast we're supposed to get showers in about a week, but around here you just never know. And that rain could amount to a mere sprinkle. So should I help them out with some water? Thanks!
Doug says he doesn't know how much water is in your soil so he can't give you a definitive answer. The simplest thing is to tell you that tulips are naturally in a spring rainy area - and are able to handle a lot of spring and fall rains. But they don't take much in the way of summer rain or they rot.
So if you have any questions that your soil is too dry, the answer is that you're not likely to hurt your tulip by watering it. Go ahead if in doubt.
