Tulip Bouquet
* Cut the flowers in the early morning if at all possible.
* Cut the flowers when the buds are just starting to show color. This not only makes sure you know what you’ve got in the bouquet (color-wise) but it will also ensure the flowers last as long as possible.
* When you take them into the house, recut them under water and immediately put them in a filled vase. Recutting them under water ensures the fragile stem ends do not dry out for even a fraction of a second. While it doesn’t seem like a very long time, a bit of air on those tender broken cells will stop the flow of nutrients up the stem. We want this flow to continue and recutting under water and immediately placing the stem in a filled vase keeps the flower alive.
* Your tulip bouquet will continue to develop and the stems will keep growing on a freshly cut tulip stem. This makes for lots more room to recut the stems every few days.
* The number
one tip for making sure your tulip bouquet lasts for a very long time
is to change the water - every day. This is the
number one thing recommended by every flower expert out there
– and this is particularly important for tulips.
* Lastly, you might consider using a package of flower food on the plants (or a tsp of lemon juice and tsp of sugar) to provide some nutrition and keep the flower water clean.
