Surprise Lily

My husband and I live on my parents (now deceased) farm in Northeast Kansas. Every year (in August) we have what my mother called a "surprise lily". One single stalk shoots up and then multiple blooms appear. They are pretty for about one week and not to be seen again until the following year.

I guess they were planted from a bulb, but they seem to be more this year. Please explain or tell me where to look on the web for information.
Thanks, Nana Nanci

Doug says that it sounds as if you're describing Lycoris or Surprise Lily - here's how to grow it and find more. :-)

I may be wrong, but your flower acts like an Amarillo. That is what mine are and they come up here in zone 9 in early august after all the green leafs die there is bare ground then all of a sudden..Big stalk and pretty pink flowers. sometimes 3 on a single stalk..I know lillys can be similar, but just so you know..

I call it the Majic Lily. It is cool. It starts in the spring, with leaves that dies away. Then up pops the stalk, and it is indeed beautiful for a week. I planted 3 and now there are 9.

Very attractive and fun for kids. The stalk comes up so fast you can almost see it coming!
