short bloom stem

My new hyacinths bloom at ground level instead of sending up bloom stalks. why???? any solutions? 2 seasons in a row.

Doug says you don't say where you live but I'm betting in a warm climate. This is really typical of hyacinths that don't get enough winter chilling. The bulb is forced into growth by rising soil temperatures, the bulb hasn't rested long enough and when it emerges, the high heat tends to shorten the stem.

So - my guess is that it's going to be an ongoing event unless you have a particularly long and cold winter.

Short Bloom Stem
by: Anonymous

I live in Colorado & we have plenty of cold winter months. My hyacinths have yet to grow a tall stem after 3 years of blooming at ground level. Any other suggestions?

stem problems in the NE

I also have this problem and I live in Northeastern PA. The buds themselves barely get above ground level and they bloom. In some cases I may get a short stem, but with few actual blooms, just a few small flowers here and there on the stem. It is very frustrating.
