this may sound daft but which way up do you plant the bulb first time planter..

Doug says the real answer is that it doesn't matter. On a commercial scale, the bulb rolls into the ground whichever way. On a home scale, some gardeners *insist* the bottom (the flat section with the hairy roots) goes down.

In my garden, I plant them as I did during my commercial days. The hole is drilled and the bulb is dropped from waist height - however it lands is good with me (and the bulb apparently as it grows just fine and will reorient itself if grown properly)
