only some blooms

by Mike
(Poughkeepsie NY)

I have about 40 daodills and only three have bloom's.Last year it was the same, they all get the same amount of sun and grow very tall. I waited for all of the leaves to die of befor i moved them to a diferent spot.
I gave them ferterlizer last spring to help them for this years flowres but i still got the same results.

Doug says that "the same amount of sun" isn't a measure of good sunlight - if they're in the deep shade, or serious shade, then this would account for the lack of blooms (not enough energy getting to the plant)

A lack of blooms on a daffodil in NY is like a cultural condition - not enough sun is the likely culprit. Too much water might do it as well. But it's cultural - figure out what you're doing wrong (you don't give me enough details to help you) by reading the how-to-grow articles and then change whatever the problem is.

Good luck.

in my garden

If it were the fly, the bulbs would be dead or dying (hollow inside as a primary symptom) - not producing leaves so that pretty much rules out the fly issue. We have lots of leaves but no blooms - that's the problem here

I would suspect narcissus bulb fly

It may not be a "cultural" problem at all. Narcissus bulb fly can pretty much take out a daffodil patch in one season.

I have lost several hippeastrum in pots to this pest, and now I'm seeing patches of daffodils I planted start to decline. I know this fly is present in the garden because I have seen it and identified it thanks to Bugguide.net.
