long leaves on Amaryllis

The plant has leaves on it that are at least five feet long. Is there any way that it will rebloom for Christmas.

Doug says: If the bulb was a new one this year, then the answer is probably not if there's no flower stalk on it by now.

If the bulb is an old one, then the answer is clearly no. The leaves are huge either because it's not getting enough light (hard to believe in Florida) or because you're feeding the heck out of it and it's getting way too much light and it thinks it's on steroids so it will produce leaves and no blooms.

But in either scenario (and likely a few others) if you have tons of leaves and no buds in early December, the odds on getting flowers by Christmas is not good. Sorry

Long leaves on Amaryllis

I live in South Florida and experienced the same problem with healthy leaves but no blooms of amaryllis in the garden. This trick has worked well for me. Lift the bulbs in January or February and store them in a dry dark place. Replant them 6 to 8 weeks later. You may even see buds protruding from the bulbs prior to planting. Every one of my bulbs bloom this way in the Spring. I've read that they need to have dry conditions in order to force flowering. I haven't tried lifting them in the fall for Christmas blooms however.
