Fritillaries Tower

by Marti Sullan
(Fairbury, IL, USA)

Fritillaria meleagris, snake's-head fritillary, is an antique bulb grown since colonial days, the bulb dating back to 1572 . Because the flower's head is facing downward, the photo was taken from beneath, revealing also an interesting perspective of towering trees and birdhouse.

bright happy tulips

Last year I didn't plant any single colour bulbs. The spring blooms have been really interesting this year with strips and splotches and splashes mingling with the solids.

Field of Dreams

Daffodils planted since the mid 1900's in Litchfield, CT. Original field's owners allowed children to pick "may bouquets". I visited with my young daughter and husband. Just lovely and so worth the visit!

The "Survivor"

This beautiful Amaryllis bulb traveled from the Island of Puerto Rico to PA during the month of Dec. I was told it would not survive in PA due to the drastic change in weather. This is the second bloom, more beautiful than the first.

The morning light coming through the Pink Pride narcissus is so pure. The background of grape hyacinth is demure enough to let them shine

The Blues of Late Spring

The Blues of Late Spring

I have been growing I. pallida "Variegata" for several years now. They have been divided and moved around a few times but still continue to thrive. Though not exactly bulbs, I just love the beautiful blue blooms, even though they last such a short while. I find the variegated foliage to be pleasing almost year round.

Faithful Orange Tulip

This tulip has been faithfully blooming for many years. It doesn't offer to spread at all and I have no idea of its name but the colour is lovely.

Creamy Dreamy Tulip

During the day this one glows much like white or silvery flowers gleam in the moonlight at night. It's quite classy. Once again I have one that I really enjoy and I have no recollection of what it's called or where I found it.

Radiant Peony

Last year I bought a bunch of bulbs, so this spring has been exciting to see what pops up. This beauty is (so far) the only blossom on my peony. I never really knew what peony's were until this one.
Hope you like the picture as much as I (now) like peony's! :)

Springtime in Connecticut

These thousands of daffodils have been planted since the mid 1900's in Litchfield, CT. The original field's owners allowed children to pick May bouquets for Mother's Day. (A U.S. holiday celebrated now to honor important women in our lives, not only our mothers.) On the day I visited with my young daughter and husband,we spent hours just admiring the beauty of spring. I now "pick" this day as one of my favorite memories.

Bearded Iris

I love iris, but unfortunately I can't grow these bearded iris in Florida. Luckily I recently visited St. Louis, Mo, and was able to visit the gardens there to see all the irises in full bloom. This is my favorite.
