daffodils in window boxes

I planted daffodil bulbs in my window boxes in the fall and none of them came up. The ones i planted in the ground are now blossoming. Any thoughts as to why this occurred?

Doug says you froze the flower box ones too much - abused them too much (didn't get them established in the fall kind of thing).

Bottom line - don't try to overwinter any kind of bulb outdoors in a container/windowbox in NY without protection (like being inside) but not outdoors
