Daffodil Planting
How Deep?
Plant each bulb so that the base of the bulb is approximately 5 inches below the surface of the soil.
Another way of looking at it is to follow the thumb rule that says to always plant a bulb so the base of the bulb is two times its height below the surface. A 2-inch tall bulb gets its base planted 4 inches below the soil surface.
This isn't rocket science. An inch (or more) either way won't kill the bulb.
Where to plant daffodils?
Planting daffodils in the semi-shade under trees or shrubs is a well-established spot for this bulb. While they love full sunshine (and do quite nicely out in full sun garden) they receive enough sun from the early spring sun (before deciduous trees and shrubs plants leaf out) to live for the year. They continue to receive some sunlight after the trees or shrubs leaf out to continue the maturation process but that intitial burst is what keeps them alive.
They do not grow well under evergreens because the light levels are simply too low in the early spring. They will fade away when light levels are too low.
