Chincherinchees or Summer Blooming Ornithogalum



Ornithogalum, also less commonly known as Chincherinchees or Star of Bethlehem is a South African plant that has won the hearts of many gardeners.

This word is an African word that means “sound” and probably refers to the sound the dried seeds make when they rattle around in the pod. The flower is used in dried arrangement as well as the more popular fresh cut flower market as they last a very long time after being cut.

While there are approximately 150 species, the most commonly grown garden plants are below.

Grow this bulb in a full sun location in dampish soil. Do not try growing it in a full sun spot in dry soil or the lifespan of the bulb will be short.

* Light requirements: sunny and moist. An afternoon sun will usually suffice to keep this bulb thriving.
