Can I transplant now

by Susie

I have a bunch of daffodils on a bank, that are coming up now Feb 14 2009 about 3 to 4 inch green stems, can I dig up now and separate and replant and have them bloom next year or would they still bloom this year?

Doug says that if these were mine, I'd be letting them bloom this spring and then doing something with them as soon as the foliage started to fade off. Dig and divide after they've bloomed is far preferable to digging and dividing now.

So the answer is yes - you "can" dig and divide now. Many will bloom because the flower bud is already there are and getting ready to spring up.

The deal however is that you may kill the bulbs for next year and I'd rather doubt the bulbs will bloom next year (those that survive) because they'll be busy building roots this year rather than flower-buds.

You "can" do it but I wouldn't. :-)
