Calla Lily Garden Design
Flowers
The calla lily (also sold as Zantedeschia, it's Latin name) are famous for their funnel like flowers and it is these flowers that make a perfect garden foil next to small, thin grasses such as the dwarf blue fescues or even some of the floppy Carex species.
Leaf Textures and Shape
Also pick these plants based on their leaf textures. You'll find a wide assortment of different shades of green, some with metallic sheens and some with mottled looks that will complement other perennial leaves. For example, you can combine the light green metallic sheen with a darker leaf such as dwarf rudbeckia. When the calla is finished blooming, the Rudbeckia starts - and their foliage contrasts nicely all the while.
Design Hints and Uses
Calla lilies also go nicely with annuals such as Tuberous Begonia and Helichrysum.
If you're looking for an elegant "look" to your garden, this is a perfect plant. It may not fit into the wild perennial border very well but it certainly adds a sense of style and class to the more formal look.
Because calla lillies also make excellent cut flowers and if you can stand to take them from the garden, they'll make excellent bouquets. I'd recommend you simply plant a few extra.
Overwintering
Remember though that this bulb is a summer blooming bulb in any zone colder than USDA 8 and needs to be lifted and stored cool and dry for the winter. Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed to use these bulbs as an integral part of your garden design.
