Growing Babiana

Babiana is sometimes known as Baboon Flower (apparently baboons consider them a delicacy) is a South African native that is best treated as an annual bulb where the temperature goes below 25F/2C. I note that botanically this is a corm rather than a bulb.

Growing Conditions

Grow in full sun or at the very least full afternoon sun - the more light the better to help this bulb produce heavily (and it will).

Plant the bottom of the corm to 5-inches deep.

Plant 3-4 inches apart.

Babiana will grow in an average soil and note that standing water will kill this bulb.

This is one bulb that will likely do well on clay soils.

Water well during the blooming period but it tolerates drought at other times.

A top dressing of compost once a year will keep it happy.

New bulblets appear above the corm.

Flowering

This is a fall bloomer in blues, purples, whites and reds. The flowers resemble a small-blooming freesia

Bulb Storing

Keep dry and at approximately 70F.
