Anemone coronaria
Two Varieties
The corms are divided into two varieties – the ‘De Caen’ or single flowers and the ‘St Brigid’ or double flowered varieties.
Planting
The flowers of both single and double varieties are usually blues, reds, pinks and whites and with a spring planting, you’ll see flowers in June through August that stick up 12 to 18” tall. Plant them 2-3 inches deep (to the base of the corm) and approximately 3 -5 inches apart.
Location
They prefer full sun although they will grow nicely in a lightly shaded area. Shelter from winds is preferred and if you’re going to try overwintering, place them in a very sheltered and warm location. Do ensure the soil is well-drained as this anemone does not like excessively damp soils.
Two Tips for Success
There are two tips I can give you to increase your success with this plant. The first is to soak the corm in warm water for a few hours before planting. This helps to get it growing.
And secondly, I can almost guarantee you're going to ask which side of this bit of shoe leather is "up". Plant it on its edge if you're not sure (and you won't be).
