What can I do with the yellow leaves after blooming is over? Cut?

Doug says cut off the yellowing leaves and put them in the conmpost pile

After cutting off the yellowing leaves, how long should you wait to cut the rest of the plant down to the ground. I don't want to hurt the bulbs and not have blooms the nest year.
